Renovation of a typical two stories single family house in Antwerp. Due to the narrow plot and to the critical condition of the building, a massive intervention was needed.
The existing U-shaped staircase was replaced by a linear one to gain usable space on both levels. The back façade was demolished and a new brick one was built, to extended the first floor and match the ground level and the neighbouring buildings.
On the ground floor the open space living area is defined by the entrance and stairs black volume and is articulated by the kitchen counter. The new opening to the garden extends the perspective and brings light into an otherwise dark area.
Black and white are used in the new interior features to contrast the use of natural materials such as bricks and wood.
